Welcome! Open Door Baltimore is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in 2006 to address poverty-related issues in Baltimore, Maryland—hunger, recidivism and unemployment. We are perfectly situated in historic East Baltimore about seven blocks northeast of of Johns Hopkins Hospital. We are located in the neighborhood known as Milton-Montford, a small community comprised of seven streets west to east (Patterson Park Avenue to North Luzerne) and three streets south to north (East Monument to East Eager). From this location, we are able to serve people in twelve neighboring communities stretching northwest to southeast from Oliver to McElderry Park.

We do not reinvent wheels though we do occasionally tilt at windmills. Where we find a person, a group or an organization doing good work in the trenches, we delight in playing the role of encourager and supporter. When asked to partner on issues outside our principal focus that can benefit the health and well-being of the city we love, our instinct is to seek common ground in pursuit of the greater good. We pride ourselves in being able to play well with others while remaining true to our core purpose and values.
When it comes to our main mission of addressing entrenched, intergenerational poverty, we are convinced that America can do better and that Americans want to better. We do not hold to the view that people of different faiths, stations and factions cannot work together on poverty issues. To the contrary, we find in our work that Americans from all walks of life are eager to reach across society's divides to help others.

The best way to break the cycle of poverty is to help parents of young children make better decisions, pursue healthier lifestyles, earn higher wages and become more involved in the education of their children. It's why we focus so much of our time on job preparedness and life skills training for young adults ages 18 to 35. It's why we partner with two elementary schools in East Baltimore, William Paca in McElderry Park and Dr. Bernard Harris in Oliver. Our approach is relational and farsighted—we work with our clients for as long as it takes. We are strengths-based and solutions-focused. Our mission is to help the poor and advocate for their place in society. While our focus is Baltimore, our reach is regional and national.
